A dry stone wall is a either a bank or free standing wall built using quarried or reclaimed stone.
Dry stone walls are meticulously built using age old methods for placement and use of specific types of stone in a particular order for the purpose of becoming one solid and incredibly strong construction.
Because dry stone walls consist of one natural material, they are eco-friendly and economical. Predominantly used in agriculture or land management to create boundaries, often used to keep live stock or wildlife either in or out of certain areas. They have recently become desirable for private garden and landscaping projects due to their economical/eco building practices, sustainability and structural uses.
Our Heritage Construction Skills project aims to support training and development of the skills needed to maintain the historic buildings and places of North Devon, where we live, work, learn and play. These buildings will go on for many years to come if we look after them well, with the right people, the right people, having the right skills, and using the right materials.
This website is a foundation for that work – helping to put the people, the skills, the materials and the old buildings together, for a better future for all.
