Historic buildings are an important part of North Devon’s character and identity. Preserving them requires specialist knowledge and traditional construction skills that are increasingly difficult to find, particularly in rural areas. Across the UK, there is a recognised shortage of heritage construction expertise, putting many historic buildings and traditional crafts at risk.
To help address this challenge locally, North Devon Council developed the North Devon Heritage Skills Project. The project began by working closely with local stakeholders, heritage specialists, tradespeople, and training providers to better understand the region’s skills needs and opportunities. The strong response from the local community led to a series of events and initiatives that helped establish the foundations of the project.
The North Devon Heritage Skills website has been created as a digital hub for heritage skills across North Devon. Its aim is to raise awareness of the heritage sector, connect people with local expertise, and support the future of traditional building skills in the region.
Launched at the Heritage Skills Day event, the website includes:
- A directory of heritage tradespeople and professionals
- Information for property owners and those caring for historic buildings
- Links to training, education, and skills opportunities
- Resources to help promote careers in the heritage sector
The website forms part of the lasting legacy of the Heritage Skills Project and will continue to support education, training, and awareness for residents, professionals, and anyone interested in North Devon’s built heritage.
